Arizona's climate produces a wide variety of stubborn weeds, from spurge and goathead (puncturevine) to tumbleweed, bermudagrass, and nutsedge. Without proactive control, weeds quickly overrun decomposed granite, rock yards, sidewalk cracks, and turf areas.

• Goathead: low-growing vines with sharp three-pointed seed pods
• Spurge: mat-forming with milky sap when broken
• Bermudagrass: aggressive runners invading flower beds and DG
• Nutsedge: triangular stems, faster-growing than surrounding turf

Most desert weeds germinate after monsoons and winter rains. Goathead and spurge spread by seed; bermudagrass and nutsedge spread by underground rhizomes and tubers, making them difficult to eliminate by pulling alone.

Goathead thorns puncture tires, shoes, and pet paws. Weeds compete with desert landscaping for water, host insects and rodents, and quickly diminish curb appeal and property value.

• Apply pre-emergent herbicides in fall and late winter
• Maintain healthy turf to crowd out invading weeds
