Wasps

Paper wasps, yellow jackets, and mud daubers are common throughout Arizona. They build nests under eaves, in attics, and in ground cavities, posing painful stinging risks during summer and fall.

• Paper wasps: slender, long dangling legs, umbrella-shaped open-cell nests
• Yellow jackets: bright yellow and black, aggressive, ground or void nests
• Mud daubers: long thin waist, build mud tube nests

Paper wasps build under eaves, patio covers, and play structures. Yellow jackets nest in ground holes, wall voids, and attics, populations peak in late summer. Mud daubers are solitary and generally non-aggressive.

Stings are painful and can cause life-threatening allergic reactions. Yellow jackets can sting repeatedly and become very aggressive in late summer when food sources dwindle.

• Inspect eaves, soffits, and patio covers regularly in spring
• Seal cracks and voids that could become nesting cavities
• Keep outdoor trash and recycling bins covered
• Avoid sweet drinks and strong fragrances outdoors in late summer
