Ticks

Several tick species are found in Arizona, particularly in the White Mountains and higher elevations. The Brown Dog Tick and Rocky Mountain Wood Tick are the most common species encountered.

• Flat, oval body before feeding; engorged and round after
• Eight legs (arachnids), no antennae
• Size ranges from poppy seed to pencil eraser

Ticks wait on vegetation with outstretched legs ('questing') for passing hosts. They attach and feed for days. Brown Dog Ticks can complete their entire lifecycle indoors.

Ticks transmit Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever, Tick Relapsing Fever, and in some regions, Lyme disease. Early removal reduces disease transmission risk.

• Wear long sleeves and pants in tick-prone areas

• Check yourself, children, and pets after outdoor activities
