Rats

Roof rats and pack rats (woodrats) are widespread in Arizona. They damage attics, vehicles, irrigation, and palm trees, and they carry serious diseases. Roof rats are especially common in citrus-growing areas.

• Roof rats: sleek, 6–8 inches body, tail longer than body, dark gray/black
• Pack rats: stockier with bushy tail, brown/gray, build large stick nests (middens)
• Greasy rub marks along travel paths

Roof rats are exceptional climbers, traveling along power lines, fences, and palm trees to access attics. Pack rats build dome-shaped nests in yards, BBQs, and engine compartments. Both are nocturnal and neophobic, wary of new objects.

Carry Hantavirus, plague, leptospirosis, and Salmonella. Pack rats chew wiring in vehicles and HVAC systems, a costly common claim. Roof rats damage attic insulation and ductwork.

• Trim tree and palm fronds 4+ feet away from rooflines
• Pick up fallen citrus and pet food daily
• Seal roof vents, eaves, and utility penetrations
• Remove yard debris, woodpiles, and pack rat middens
