Bees

Nearly every feral honey bee colony in Arizona is Africanized. The Arizona Department of Agriculture and University of Arizona Cooperative Extension have treated wild colonies as Africanized until proven otherwise since the mid-1990s. They look almost identical to European honey bees, but they defend a much larger perimeter, respond in far greater numbers, and pursue threats far longer. • Fuzzy, golden-brown body about 1/2 inch long, visually identical to European honey bees
• Hairy thorax and pollen baskets on the hind legs
• Established colonies show steady, heavy traffic in and out of a single hole, crack, or vent
• Common Arizona nest sites: block-wall voids, water and irrigation valve boxes, mesquite hollows, shed roofs, cabin eaves, propane enclosures, BBQ grills, empty flowerpots
• A resting swarm looks like a softball-to-basketball cluster hanging from a branch or eave, and can move into a wall void within 24 to 48 hours
• An audible 'roar' or hum from several feet away when you approach a wall, box, or tree means an established colony

Africanized honey bees defend a perimeter of 50 to 150 feet, respond to disturbances within seconds, and have been documented pursuing people and animals up to a quarter mile from the colony. Triggers include vibration, engine noise, barking dogs, and even loud voices. When bees start 'bumping' your head or hovering aggressively as you walk within 20 to 30 feet of a structure, that is a defensive warning. Back away immediately. Swarm season peaks March through June across Arizona, with a secondary wave after monsoon rains in late summer.

Africanized bee venom is not more toxic than a regular honey bee's. The danger is the sheer number of stings. Mass-sting events can be life-threatening even for people without a bee allergy, and anaphylaxis is a real risk for anyone previously sensitized. Children, elderly residents, and pets are the most vulnerable. Beyond the sting risk, an established colony left inside a wall will eventually die and leach honey and rotting comb through drywall, drawing secondary pests like small hive beetles, ants, and rodents.

• Walk your perimeter every spring and inspect water meter boxes, irrigation valves, sheds, empty pots, BBQs, and outbuildings
• Seal weep holes with stainless steel mesh (bees chew through foam and expanding sealant)
• Cap unused irrigation and utility boxes; screen attic vents and soffit gaps larger than 1/8 inch
• Pull mulch, woodpiles, and stored equipment back from the foundation
• Keep dogs leashed and away from any structure showing heavy bee traffic
• Never spray a colony with a garden hose or store-bought wasp spray. You'll provoke the entire colony without killing it.
• Call a licensed pro within 24 hours of spotting a swarm. A resting cluster can become a wall-void colony within 1 to 2 days.
