    Bed Bugs

Hitchhiking pests that cause itchy bites and sleepless nights.

    Overview

Bed bugs have made a major resurgence across Arizona. These small, flat insects feed exclusively on blood and can infest any environment, from homes to hotels to offices.

    Identification

    • Flat, oval, reddish-brown, about the size of an apple seed
    • Nymphs are translucent to light tan
    • Leave dark fecal spots on mattresses and linens

    Behavior

Bed bugs are nocturnal feeders attracted to body heat and CO2. They hide in mattress seams, headboards, baseboards, and furniture crevices during the day. They spread by hitchhiking on luggage and clothing.

    Risks

While not known to transmit diseases, bed bug bites cause itchy welts, allergic reactions, and significant psychological stress. Infestations can grow rapidly.

    Prevention

    • Inspect hotel rooms when traveling
    • Encase mattresses and box springs
    • Reduce clutter around sleeping areas
    • Inspect secondhand furniture before bringing home
