    Ants

From fire ants to carpenter ants, Arizona has many invasive species.

    Overview

Arizona hosts numerous ant species including fire ants, carpenter ants, and harvester ants. These persistent pests can contaminate food, damage structures, and deliver painful stings.

    Identification

    • Vary in size from 1/16 to 1/2 inch
    • Colors range from light brown to black
    • Segmented body with elbowed antennae

    Behavior

Ants are social insects living in large colonies. They follow pheromone trails to food sources and can quickly infest kitchens and pantries. Carpenter ants excavate wood for nesting.

    Risks

Fire ants deliver painful, venomous stings. Carpenter ants can cause structural damage. All species contaminate food supplies.

    Prevention

    • Keep food in sealed containers
    • Clean up crumbs and spills promptly
    • Seal entry points around the home
    • Trim vegetation away from the structure
