What are termite mud tubes?

Mud tubes are pencil-width tunnels of soil, saliva, and waste that subterranean termites build to travel between their underground colony and the wood they're eating. The tubes keep termites humid and hidden from predators. Finding them on a foundation, stem wall, pier, or inside a garage is direct evidence of subterranean termite activity and warrants a professional inspection.

Subterranean termites are active across southeastern and eastern Arizona, and mud tubes are the most common way homeowners first notice them. In slab-on-grade construction, tubes usually appear on the exterior stem wall, at expansion joints, or climbing interior garage walls. On stem-wall and crawlspace homes they show up on piers and floor joists.
What to look for
- Thin, ridged earthen tubes running vertically up concrete or block
- Tubes at plumbing penetrations, expansion joints, or where soil meets the structure
- Hollow-sounding or blistered wood near the tube's endpoint
- Discarded wings near windows or light fixtures after a spring swarm
- Small dirt-packed holes in drywall
What you can do
- Do not scrape away every tube before an inspection — leave at least some intact so the inspector can assess activity
- Break open a short section to check for live termites; a tube that is rebuilt within a few days indicates an active colony
- Photograph the location and extent of the tubes
- Eliminate wood-to-soil contact and fix leaks and drainage problems that keep soil moist against the foundation
When professional service is warranted
Mud tubes indicate an active or recently active colony, and colony treatment is not a DIY job. Retail products applied at the tube treat a few foragers, not the colony, and can cause termites to reroute into areas that are harder to detect.
